And that's despite having a smaller 3,450 mAh battery than the last generation of handset.

Over its last two iterations, the Google Pixel’s camera was practically celebrated as a star quarterback, set to outperform the rest of the pack by a mile. Naturally, there were monumental expectations for what the Pixel 3’s camera would be capable of. I’ve had the pleasure of testing not only the Pixel 3’s shooter, but also the one on the new iPhone XS, side-by-side to determine their strengths and weaknesses.
While Google is still confident about putting out seriously good photos through a single camera, the iPhone relies on a dual camera setup to rival the Pixel. Before I dive into the nitty-gritty of these great phone cameras, here are their specifications:

First things first
Both these phones take great pictures, thanks to the wonders of computational photography. However, you’ll notice subtle differences in their results, because of the different sensors and post-processing methods for each device.
All the photographs you see here have been shot using each phone’s stock camera apps; however, I used Musecam, a third-party iOS app to take RAW format photos (which preserve more image information than compressed, ready-to-share JPEGs) on the iPhone.Camera comparison in different situations
Daylight: Most photos captured in daylight by both devices retain a lot of detail and sharpness. However, there are visible differences between them when you look at them on a laptop screen or an external monitor. Photos taken from the iPhone seem brighter, and photos taken from the Pixel seem to rely on contrast for dramatic effect.
The iPhone XS’ photos are warmer than those from the Pixel 3 XL, and may remind you of results from top-end Samsung phones. I find the Pixel 3’s photos treated to my taste, to the point that I’m happy to post them straight to Instagram without filters.

LG's officially taken the wraps off its latest premium smartphone, the LG V40 ThinQ. While in many ways it's taking the standard recipe for a premium 2018 Android handset, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, it's in the camera space that LG is really taking it to its competition.
The LG V40 ThinQ is LG's first phone to feature five cameras, with 2 front-facing and 3 rear-facing cameras. At the front, there are 8MP and 5MP cameras for selfies with a depth of field, but it's around the back that LG's hoping the V40 ThinQ will really stand out.
There's a 12MP f/1.5 sensor with 1.4μm sized pixels, a serious jump up from the light sensing capabilities of the LG G7 ThinQ. That's matched with a 16MP f/1.9 super wide angle lens for your landscape photography needs and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens for zoom and portrait photography modes.
It's a very different take to that of the triple-lens-equipped Huawei P20 Pro, where a mix of very high megapixel count and monochrome lenses make up its photographic muscle. LG's claim is that the LG V40 ThinQ is capable of a triple preview feature, allowing you to see how each lens is capturing a scene in real time. You can then choose the lens that suits you best, or capture all three as either individual shots or a stitched together GIF that moves between each lenses' take.
As a ThinQ-branded product, it's also got AI-assisted camera features as part of LG's ongoing commitment to AI across its entire product range. We recently talked to Dr Peter Pyungchul Kim from LG about how the company sees the AI landscape evolving.
Like V-series phones before it, the LG V40 ThinQ features an OLED display. It's a 6.4-inch panel with a notable notch at the top. On the audio front, like the LG G7 ThinQ, it features a quad DAC for better audio performance, and unlike many premium flagships, there's still a full headphone jack present.
LG will ship the LG V40 with Android 8 ("Oreo") on board, which is slightly disappointing for a late-2018 flagship, and especially as it's all but certain that Google will launch the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL next week, both running Android 9 ("Pie").

LG Australia hasn't confirmed local pricing or availability for the LG V40 ThinQ, but it's set to go on sale in the US from 18 October through a range of carriers for between $US900 and $US980. That should suggest pricing around the $1,300 mark when and if the LG V40 ThinQ launches in Australia.

Display and Performance

On the display front, the smartphone comes with a 6.4-inch P-OLED display. With this size, the smartphone looks comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the iPhone XS Max. In its already vibrant OLED display, the smartphone features Quad-HD+ resolution in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. This contributes to the pixel density of 537PPI. So the contents on the display will look really sharp.
The phone also has a notch on the top to accommodate the dual selfie camera, earpiece, and various sensors. However, unlike the iPhones, the notch is narrow on the size.
Since it is a flagship phone, it also features Snapdragon 845 chipset like all the flagship Android smartphones of 2018. There is also a 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.1 storage alongside. So with this setup, we can expect a top-tier performance from the phone. The phone has also allocated a dedicated SD card slot if the provided internal storage turns out insufficient.

Camera features

As mentioned earlier, the phone has five cameras in total. So the camera is the unique selling point of the phone. LG V40 ThinQ embraces a triple camera setup at the back aligned in a horizontal configuration. Among the three, the normal or the standard one comes with 12MP resolution, f/1.5 aperture, 3-axis OIS, PDAF & Laser autofocus. The second camera with a 16MP resolution features ultrawide lens, which increases the field of view to 107-degrees. The third one or the telephoto camera comes with a 12MP resolution, f/2.4 aperture and features OIS for the stabilization. The telephoto lens on the phone is also capable of capturing images with the lossless zooming up to 2x.

There is not much to write home about in terms of the difference between the S8 and the new S9 Galaxy. The S9 has disappointed some Samsung enthusiasts by not incorporating the fingerprint sensor on the screen as we have seen with the Vivo X20 Plus UD. Despite that fact, the specs on its screen are nothing short of high-end.

The Galaxy S9 has a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 1440×2960 resolution. That is about 567 pixels per inch; guaranteed to give you super-crisp and clear viewing. The screen ratio is 18.5:9 with the top bezel being slimmer than the bottom bezel; this designed allowed Samsung to fit the same size (5.8-inch) display into a smaller body than that of the Galaxy S8.
If you are familiar with the Infinity Display design on the S8, you will feel right at home with the new S9 as the design is the same. Like we said earlier, there is not much to write home about when it comes to design; the Galaxy S9 simply mimics its predecessor; albeit with some minor improvements here and there.
Both phones have the glass back, a rounded display at the front and slim bezels; Samsung is trying to merge the screen into the body seamlessly. Some of the improvements Samsung says the S9 has over S8 include iris scanner hole being well hidden, and less bezel at both the top and bottom of the display.
When the display turns off, it is now much darker than what we see on the S8. The S8 also received a lot of criticism for having the fingerprint sensor placed too close to the camera. With the S9, Samsung has moved it a bit further below the camera, with a reasonable distance between the two. Making it hard for you to accidentally touch the camera when you go to swipe your fingerprints.

Camera features

Changed the words ‘variable aperture’ to ‘dual aperture’ instead, which is more accurate. Added a mention about the S8 series and Note8’s f/1.7 apertures. Added a short comparison between super slow-motion resolutions.
The headline feature for the S9 and S9+ camera is its lens, which switches between f/1.5 and f/2.4. The S9 and S9+ share the same wide-angle main camera, which is the one with the dual apertures. This main camera captures 12MP images using a 1/2.55-inch sensor, with a pixel size of 1.4 microns. The S9 comes with this main camera only, but the S9+ also comes with a second camera for zoom.
The S9+ is Samsung’s first ‘S’ series smartphone with a dual camera system, but it’s not the company’s first. That would be last year’s Note8. The S9+’s zoom, or telephoto, camera also captures 12MP photos. But it has a smaller sensor that measures 1/3.4“, with a pixel size of 1 micron. Its lens has a fixed aperture of f/2.4. The sensor and pixel sizes for both cameras are similar to the Galaxy S8 and Note8 cameras.

The Xperia XZ3 has an impressive set of specs, from performance through to camera and screen capability. Sony has put their BRAVIA TV technology into the screen, with an OLED display featuring QHD+ resolution. (QuadHD, 1440x2880 pixels). A 3D curved design makes the phone look sleek and stylish. 
Inside there's a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, giving 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory, expandable with a MicroSD card up to 512GB. The phone has been designed to cope with multiple applications, including playing memory-demanding games, giving you a smooth and uninterrupted experience when recording videos etc. 
On to the most important part for us photographers - the camera. The XZ3 has a 19 Megapixel rear camera with MotionEye technology, enabling it to predict what you want to shoot before you shoot it, with predictive capture. This snaps up to 4 images before and after you press the shutter, letting you choose the best one. 
There's a 1/2.3" EXMOR sensor, with an award-winning G 25mm f/2.0 lens on the front. Predictive Hybrid Autofocus can hone in on your subject in as little as 0.03 seconds, and there's also an autofocus burst mode. SteadyShot with 5-axis stabilisation is built-in and a max ISO of 12800 is available for low light images. There is 8x digital zoom - but no optical zoom.
On the front, the XZ3 is no lightweight either with a 13-megapixel selfie camera featuring a 23mm wide angle lens. Sony says this camera is great in low light, and the ability to defocus the background in your shots with a bokeh effect for portraits that stand out. SteadyShot is also built into this camera, which is a rare but good addition. 
4K HDR video recording is available, giving you the best clarity and true-to-life colours when capturing scenes. 
The phone has a large 3330mAh battery designed to last all day with a variety of adaptive stamina modes. The phone is water resistant and has a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 screen for toughness and scratch resistance. 
The dedicated shutter button on the right hand side of the phone is a nice, unique touch that has been present on all Sony's smartphones, and sets them apart from the competition.
The phone lacks a headphone jack and had a USB-C port for charging and transferring images. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC are all built-in, as expected with a premium smartphone such as this. There's also GPS, handy for pinpointing where your images were taken. The fingerprint sensor is on the back underneath the camera, and on the right-hand side underneath the power and volume buttons is a dedicated camera shutter button. When holding the phone landscape, this is right where the shutter on a camera would be, which is a nice touch from Sony that has been consistent throughout all their smartphone models - something that competitors lack. The SIM/memory slot has been moved to the top edge. 
So, what are the main differences between the XZ3 and XZ2? Well, they both have the same amount of processing power -in fact, they have the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The XZ3 has a slightly better battery capacity and weighs 5g less. The main camera is the same on both, but the front camera has had an upgrade, with the XZ3 featuring a 13 megapixel 23mm wide angle lens compared to a 5-megapixel offering on the XZ2. The screen is now a full 6 inches compared to 5.7 inches on the XZ2 and is QHD+ (2880x1440) as opposed to FullHD+ (1080x2160) on the XZ2. 

Display and Performance

The XZ3 is Sony's first phone with an OLED display. You could argue that Sony has slipped a little in the phone display stakes compared to rivals. Even last year's XZ2 had big gaps top and bottom as Samsung, LG and others were shrinking the gaps considerably.
This one goes much further and has way more screen than previous models, even if the chin and forehead are still noticeable. And the display certainly reaches right to the edges on the phone's long sides.
This screen is easily on a par with rival handsets and, more importantly, highly attractive in its own right.
With the arrival of OLED Sony is also somewhat late to the display party, but the company has taken the time to get it right, using knowhow from the Sony TV division, the manufacturer was quick to claim.
And the results are deeply impressive. Pin-sharp, rich and vibrant – well, of course. But with almost no off-axis colour degradation, something many OLED screens suffer from, and outstanding, faithful video playback, the Sony screen really stands out.
That's partly because it upconverts SDR content to an approximation of HDR.

Like rival phones from HTC, LG and others, the screen ratio is 18:9, that's 2:1, and contributes to the phone's physical comfort factor.

Camera features

Unlike many manufacturers, Sony has gone for a single rear camera on this flagship phone. And it's worth noting this camera does not feature the advanced signal processor announced in the spring and found on the Xperia XZ2 Premium.
Even so, the 19-megapixel sensor on the XZ3 is powerful and impressive, with AI smarts. Sony's not alone in using artificial intelligence as an advanced scene mode, for instance, but here there's a focus on items such as Smart Launch. Raise the phone in landscape mode and it automatically launches the camera, with a darkened area round a bright circle. From here, you can touch the circle to shoot, as well as the trigger button at the side of the display. Sony also has a hardware camera shutter button which you can use – Sony is one of few to offer a dedicated button and it's very useful. Though, of course, you can often use other buttons, like a volume button on the iPhone, for instance, to take your shot.
In practice this worked mostly but not always – though my upswing may have been a little over-exaggerated and anyway the prototype had very early software.
The AI is also used for predictive shots, where the camera starts taking frames before you press the trigger, and the AI helps decide what makes a good shot.
